A Day at the Dog Shelter

Once a month, I try to help out at a dog shelter somewhere in Taiwan.  The volunteer group that I joined usually helps out at shelters in the Taipei area, but this past weekend, we took a trip down to Taizhong (in mid-Taiwan) to help out a shelter there. There are about 60 or so dogs (that's just my guestimate) who all need loving homes. We are always looking for more volunteers; anyone who is willing to work and loves dogs qualifies! The more the merrier!

So we woke up Sunday morning at 7:00AM and met up at MinQuan West Road MRT station at 8:00AM. After eating a quick breakfast, we started to drive down to Taizhong, which takes about 2.5 hours from Taipei. When we arrived at the shelter, the first thing we had to do was tidy up the place a bit. You can imagine, with THAT many dogs running around, there's gonna be a mess!

This is one of the larger areas for the dogs to run around. You can see that the couple who runs the shelter try to keep it in good condition. It's definitely not an easy feat and requires a lot of work.

This is one of the dogs at the shelter. He can only sit up because he has a lot of ailments in his body, which make it painful to stand like a normal dog. Many dogs at this particular location are handicapped in some way or another. I really admire the couple who own the shelter; they take a lot of handicapped dogs who require a LOT of intensive care, and they do their best to give them a comfortable environment to live in.

One of our main responsibilities this time was to wash as many dogs as we could. It was impossible to give all the dogs a bath because there were so many, but we did the best we could with the limited water supply. Some dogs really hated being washed, but they were obedient enough to stay still to let us do our jobs. This particular dog, however, looks like he's enjoying it!

Waiting to get doused with water. He looks a little bit helpless, doesn't he? haha

This dog was being really good and held still as he was catered by 3 volunteers. It's almost as if the dogs know we are there to help. They were very friendly and eager to play with us (even when they were wet~)

My good friends Gino and Finley also volunteered.
It's always nice to do volunteer work with friends.
We need more volunteers! Some of these dogs haven't had baths in a whole year (or more)!
Usagi is helping blow dry one of the dogs after a shower. The dog looks like he's enjoying it, doesn't he?

More blow drying!

This dog has lost an arm. A lot of these dogs were previously abused or involved in an accident, and because of there handicaps, their previous owners abandoned them. I really think people can be so cruel sometimes.

I really love this picture. The dog looks like he's smiling at the camera!

You can see this dog has an injury on his foot. I'm not too sure how he got it, but it makes me sad to see. However, it doesn't stop him from being energetic and jumping around! haha

I LOVE this picture. Gosh, this dog is so cute! Smile!

My main job that day was to be the event photographer. I really wanted to help with the washing and cleaning, but taking pictures was just as important as we hope after people see the pictures, more volunteers will emerge and also possible adopters for the dogs!

Even though I was mostly behind the camera, it didn't stop me from getting plenty of doggie lovin'! (and it also didn't stop me from getting dirty from all the doggie slobber on my t-shirt!) lol

He's a big dog!

Subtle shot

So many dogs!

This dog was one of my favorites. He's albino and also deaf, but that doesn't stop him from giving everyone his lovin'~ He was very kind and gentle.

Some of us helped clean out the cages

Often times, we would have situations where we had dogs on both sides that demanded (politely) for us to pet them. A good time to be ambidextrous!
Shaving time!

This dog required a LONG time to shave. He also had a lot of skin infections because it's been so long since he's had a bath. Donations for these shelters are also welcome. If we had had more equipment to help the dogs, we could have done much more.

Because the water supply was running low, some of us decided that it would be nice to take some of the dogs out for a stroll. They were DEFINITELY excited to be able to run outside. All of them were really well-behaved

As I mentioned above, there are many handicapped dogs. Here is one dog who's back legs don't function so she requires a "wheelchair"

This dog has lost all nerve and motor functions in his bottom half. He can't even urinate or defecate without the assistance of someone to squeeze it out of him. It was sad to watch

One of THE cutest dogs at the shelter. Although this little French pit bull has a wheelchair, it definitely didn't stop him from running around!

I want to take him home!

This dog is the mascot for the organization TCASA (Taiwan Companion Animal Support Association). He is simply adorable, and when he looks him at people, he tilts his head to the side. I mentioned how cute it was, and then one of the workers said, "oh, he tilts his head cuz he has a tumor in this brain." wah wah wah. That really killed the cuteness factor. He's still cute though!

Gino and I holding up a sign to support adoption!

Here's my friend Josh and I, taking pics with the dog right before we were about to leave. You can see in the background, most of the dogs had become exhausted after a day of playing with us and getting baths. Although some dogs were still awake to send us off with kisses, like the one giving me love on the left!

"How much longer do I need to bathe?"

"Almost done!"

There were a lot of volunteers that day. Most of us didn't know each other, but it didn't matter. We were all there to help a good cause. These dogs all need loving homes. Even with their handicaps, they all make amazing companions and are as loving and energetic as any dog.

I leave this post with a pic of my new best friend! I really miss these dogs already and it's only been 2 days. I can't wait to go back to any dog shelter and to spend a day helping out and giving these dogs hope that there is SOMEONE out there who will take them in and love them unconditionally. I really, really want a dog, but at my current housing and financial situation, I know I wouldn't be able to give my dog the attention he needs. In the meantime, I'm going to try my best to volunteer whenever I can. If you are in Taiwan and are interested in joining us or finding out more information on how to get involved, you can go to: https://www.facebook.com/tcasalovecatdog/info

1885 Burger Store + The Spot

Welcome to the year 1885!

[1885 Burger Store] is a chain burger restaurant found in several locations around Taipei. One sunny afternoon, I met with my friend Johann at 1885. Neither of us had had burgers at this restaurant before, but we're both burger fans.

Hi Johann!

Here's the lunch menu! The prices as you can see are not that bad! And they have "special priced meal of the day,"which can be good for people to try a variety of dishes if they eat at 1885 often. We went on a Thursday, so I ordered Chili Cheese Burger (with my favorite Jalapeños!

The Chili Cheese burger came out quite quickly! The presentation is decent; looks tasty to me!
Overall the burger tasted alright; however, the hamburger meat fell apart after biting through half of the burger. I don't think the meat was prepared correctly, because a good burger holds itself together. This burger, although topped with good quality toppings, fell apart because of the meat, which is the essential part of the meal!

Johann ordered a brunch meal (although I didn't catch the name). She enjoyed it. No complaints here!

All in all, 1885 was a decent burger restaurant. I think the food could have better, and the service was a bit negligent (the menu boasts free refills, but it doesn't mention your server doesn't really ever come check to see if you need a refill). It took a few times to get a server to come and get a refill for my coke zero. You could argue that maybe I shouldn't drink so much soda, but I could just say I love my coke zero, so back off!

The SPOT!

Once a week, I like to meet my friend, Nicole (who I have introduced before in the article about helping out at the elementary school) for an afternoon tea, where we sit at the table and work on our respective stuff. We chose to meet at Zhongshan station's 『The Spot』, a cafe built in the former American Consulate in Taipei. Around the corner from MRT Exit 4, you will see a Victorian, Southern US style building (which sticks out like a sore thumb in the middle of Taipei buildings.) It is surrounded by a relatively large yard, which is well-kept. The venue has actually been used by people (like celebrity Chang Chen) for weddings. My roommate, Vanessa, has asked me and Nicole to tell her future fiancé (who doesn't exist yet) that she wants him to pop the question at this location.

There is a cafe and a store selling fun little trinkets on the first floor. On the second floor, there is a small exhibition room and a theater that holds showings for artsy fartsy movies.

My lovely friend, Nicole, deciding on what to drink

Full house! Nice and clean interior design. I like the seats as well.

Here is the menu: front

And back.

I highly recommend 『The Spot』to anyone who wants to relax at a cafe and have a good chat with friends. The atmosphere is nice, although it can get quite busy so it might not be the quietest of cafes. I didn't try the food this time, but the drinks were well done so you don't have to worry it's a cafe where things look better than they taste!

Italian Food Anyone?

I have always been a huge fan of Italian food. As a kid growing up in America, I LOVED when they had spaghetti day at the cafeteria (even though it was literally like, canned-food quality). My mom used to take my brother and I to Olive Garden on certain Sundays of the month, where we would order a healthy amount of food, favorites being Eggplant Parmesan, classic spaghetti and meatballs, and of course, lasagna.

After coming to Taiwan, I have been searching constantly for some American-style Italian food. I love Taiwanese food, but sometimes I feel like they tend to sweeten a lot of their recipes (sugar in pizza dough) and lighten the sauces (more watery versions of tomato marinara sauce) in order to cater to the taste buds of the local Taiwanese. I have grown to enjoy the Italian food here, but sometimes, I crave the heavy, cheesy, fatty goodness of the American Italian food.

Anyways, I guess the point of the last two paragraphs was just to demonstrate how rare it is to find an Italian restaurant that serves not-so Taiwanese style Italian food. I was fortunate to have someone take me a really decent Italian place last night.

Welcome to Antico Forno (which means "Old Oven" in Italian)!!

The entrance to Antico Forno (right next to The Diner)

Right when you enter through the door, you can see the "pizza guy" baking fresh pizzas in a huge oven. It definitely has the novelty of a genuine Italian restaurant, and you know you're getting fresh pizza! The owner is a young guy who used to be a model (you can tell), but he's also very hard-working and has kept this restaurant open for the past 5 years. He's the one pictured below, making the pizzas.

The actual interior decor of the restaurant is quite cozy. Nothing too flashy, but definitely is cozy and comfortable. There are several small tables, suitable for small parties, and also two/three large party tables that can hold large gatherings. If you ever want to get some friends together and have some pizza, family style, this is a good restaurant to choose.

I've never been to Italy, mind you, but I can tell that this restaurant and its chefs really do take a lot of care and detail into the taste of their food. I can't be a judge to tell you if it's traditional Italian, but I can tell you as a person who's eaten A LOT of Italian food, this place makes really decent Italian.

I came at dinner time, but the owner said that their afternoon tea time menu (pictured below) is worth checking out. You can read the details below if you're interested:

Honestly, to the tell you the truth, I don't really know the names of the dishes we ordered, cuz I basically walked in and told my friend, "it's up to you, I eat anything." So he ordered a pizza and a pasta.
Pictured below is the 12" pizza we ordered. I believe it was called the Pine Nut Pizza, or something along those lines (sorry guys, I didn't even look at the menu, but in Chinese it's 松露帕切達) It had pine nuts, ham, and mushrooms, baked on top of a medium layer of cheese, and chewy dough. It was divine. You have the choice of choosing pizzas at 8" or 12".

The pasta was just as delicious as the pizza. We ordered the "Napoleon Tomato Pasta" which consisted of noodles that were cooked al dente (just right, not too hard, not too chewy), fresh cherry tomatoes, fresh tomato sauce, sprinkled with powdered cheese and the taste of something truffle-y, and egg white on top. I'm not quite sure what the "truffle" tasting component was, but it added an extra dimension of pleasantness to the noodles. I really enjoyed this pasta as well. I would also recommend using their hot oil to sprinkle on the food, if you are into that sorta thing. The spice of the fresh chili really blended well with the food. I'm telling you, the owner really takes his food seriously!~

All in all, I highly recommend "Antico Forno" to everyone who has a liking to Italian food. It's tasty, savory, and made with care. The staff is friendly, and honestly, it's really nice to see a young boss who really knows what he's doing. You can tell he really takes his profession seriously, which is highly reflective in his food. Also, if you're an ABC or expat or foreign student living in Taipei and are looking for a more "heavy" tasting Italian restaurant amongst the other Taiwanese-style Italian places, you should definitely considering having a meal here.
